What Exactly Is Kinetic Art?

Humans have always been captivated by the kinetic movement and kinetic art throughout the ages. From anyone staring out of their window on a cold afternoon looking at trees moving together in the wind or watching enchanted as a sycamore seed falls from their hand in a downwards spiral pattern. The concept has become more prevalent in today’s society because of new technologies that help artists design and build things faster and easier. My processes evolve and change rapidly as I develop my understanding as a kinetic sculptor and this website is a great way to document my journey.

The Foundations of Kinetic Art

Kinetic art is related to motion. It has its foundation in Dada or Dadaism (an extremely interesting art movement that was created in 1916) and Constructivism. Both these movements established a new way of creating art. I am sure many of you know the iconic “Bicycle Wheel” sculpture by Marcel Duchamp which I believe is credited as the first kinetic work of art.

From the beginning of the 20th century, many artists began incorporating movement in their creations. This has resulted in Kinetic Art becoming much more mainstream and today in the modern era social media and the internet has meant that the reach of newer projects can be amplified greatly.
My Kinetic Art Sculptures
The kinetic sculptures that I create are designed to enhance the space they inhabit, creating constantly varying, fluid forms that create a connection between the viewer and the invisible elements that surround us in nature.   My sculptures explore the relationship between geometry and form within their environment and they are designed to capture the natural flow and balance of our world. All the sculptures are available in shiny metal finish and rusted metal depending on your preference.  Read on to explore my kinetic art sculptures or find out a bit more about me and my creative process.
‘Ripples’ is my latest sculpture for 2024 and has taken a couple of years of development to allow it move in even the lightest winds. This piece is available in various sizes and colour finishes to suit your desired space; shiny stainless steel and earthy rusted finish. Shipping is available around the world, with wind loading requirements matched to your specific location. There is no maintenance required on these sculptures and I am sure that they will bring you years of endless joy.

‘Fluidity’ is my largest and most ambitious kinetic wind sculpture so far. I endeavour to bring a sense of joy to its viewers with its ever-changing flows of energy.

This contemporary sculpture enhances the space it inhabits by reflecting the world around it and reacting to new weather conditions with a variety of different movements. The mesmerising and enchanting nature of its rotational flow makes it fascinating and inspiring to watch, as it appears to dance and play in its natural environment.
Many years of experience in designing and creating kinetic wind sculptures means I have been able to develop pieces that move effortlessly in the lightest of winds, and do not build up energy in strong weather conditions. The development of this piece took nine months, and involved working with a variety of specialists; it is engineered to UK wind loading standards.
It has taken many years of learning to understand the required geometry within these pieces, this has allowed me to make sculptures that constantly, effortlessly move in flowing, varying forms, even in the lightest of winds.
“Coreografia” kinetic wind sculpture is a contemporary sculpture in a line of exploration around the human form. The gently moving sculpture dances through day and night bringing a sense of wonder to any garden she is immersed in.
This sculpture is made of stainless steel and is designed to withstand UK wind loading’s with no maintenance requirements.  The sculpture is silent and even in high winds the piece does not gain excessive energy; continuing to move gracefully and elegantly.
Meandering Valleys
‘Meandering Valleys’ kinetic sculpture moves effortlessly in the lightest of winds.  Emulating the sensation of walking through a valley with a meandering river, this sculpture continuously reflects shapes that surround us in nature.
This contemporary sculpture is a mesmerizing piece to watch as it constantly forms new shapes, having varied personalities in different weather conditions.
A smaller version of ‘Meandering Valleys’ Kinetic Sculpture is available too, this is suitable for smaller garden spaces and moves just as easily.
“Wisp” is another outdoor kinetic wind sculpture which is available in stainless steel or corten architectural steel. This smaller kinetic sculpture is a great addition to any size of garden. The beauty of balance and geometry is shown off in a spectacular way within this piece.
Transfiguration is a stainless steel kinetic wind sculpture which plays with the concept of balance and transfer of energy through specific angles to create intriguing, fluid, geometric patterns. Its reaction to its environment; depending on wind conditions and surroundings, creates constantly varying, unique; flowing and chaotic systems even in the lightest of winds.

 Serenity (Static)
Discover Serenity, a contemporary garden sculpture that gracefully ascends into the sky, inviting viewers to gaze upward in awe and appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us.
Introducing ‘Arctangent’ a contemporary kinetic garden sculpture which moves with the natural forces of the wind. Arctangent utilises bearings and weights to carefully balance the piece, allowing each element to flicker in the passing winds.
Geodesic Sculpture
Informed by the study of sacred geometry, this contemporary sculpture is a complex shape which could be considered a 3D representation of 4D space. The form is created from the platonic solids and utilises mathematical formulas to expand outwards, creating the intricate forms of the sculpture.
